Grand tour

This tour was created for those, who would like to get an overview of the past and present of Hungarian Jewry and would like to understand the differences between our main religious wings. With the help of our English/German speaking guides you will be acquainted with the most important chapters of the history and culture of the Hungarian Jewry.

We visit the Synagogue triangle, which shows different views of Jewry in Budapest. The tour includes an interior visit to the Dohány Street Synagogue, which is the largest in Europe and local guided tour in the Jewish Museum, which has an important and unique collection of art pieces from Hungary and Eastern Europe. You will see The Martyrs’ Cemetery where thousands were buried, who were killed during WWII. Our next stop will be the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life which was created to remind us of those who perished in the Holocaust. We pass by the Heroes’ Temple, built in memory of the Jewish soldiers who gave their lives for Austria-Hungary during WWI.

The first part of the Grand Tour includes the whole Essential Tour (Madách Square, Rumbach Street Synagogue, Dohány Street Synagogue, Jewish Museum, Martyrs’ Cemetery, Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park, Tree of Life, Heroes' Temple, Jewish Center).
After a break we continue our walk through the Jewish Quarter, on the streets of the former Ghetto, which hosts synagogues, monuments, kosher restaurants, and kosher shops. While your guide tells you important facts and local stories of this area, you also get basic information about Budapest. During our journey we visit the Memorial Park dedicated to Carl Lutz, who is also known as „Hungary’s Schindler”, then we pass by the famous Gozsdu Passage. The third station of the Synagogue Triangle is the Kazinczy Street Synagogue (interior visit), which is one of the largest operating orthodox synagogues in Europe, built in art-nouveau style. At the end of the tour, you have two options: you can accept our invitation to have a cake in the glatt kosher Fröhlich confectionery or you can receive 10% discount in the glatt kosher Carmel restaurant.

I took the Expanded Grand Tour and Fatima my tour guide really made the history of the area come alive with small facts and anecdotes. The tour included a private tour through the Jewish Museum with a museum tour guide who was able to tailor the information on the group's existing knowledge and expand upon it. The Duhany Street Synagogue is just stunning in it's architecture and size and unlike other places, you can take pictures. The tour included entry into a synagogue that has not been restored to really see and appreciate the damage WWII and communism did to this neighborhood. And the yummy local pastry at the end of the tour was fantastic.
